The Sweetness of a Bakery

By Elizabeth McCarthy

With the single ring of a shopkeeper's bell, it all begins to hit. The sugary vanilla aroma.

The not quite noticeable heat of an oven set at 350°. The charming glass-blown lights. The

handpicked art of iconic local places. The experience of walking into a bakery is all of these

things combined into one moment of dream-like sensory overload. Bakeries are nostalgic.

While known to be enjoyable, bakeries are underestimated for their scientifically

beneficial and stimulating qualities. They fill our bellies and our hearts with comfort and

gratification that not many simple pleasures do. These feelings of indulgence activate our

serotonin levels, releasing increased amounts of the neurotransmitter in our brains. Increased

serotonin has been proven to make “you feel more focused, emotionally stable, happier, and

calmer” (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).

Beyond this personal boost, visiting local bakeries breeds stronger community and

connection. It is a sweet way to support small businesses and the local economy. Often, bakeries

source their ingredients from other local vendors, spreading the community gain even deeper.

Who knew a croissant, a few lemon scones, and some oatmeal raisin cookies could do so much!

Bon appétit!

As for the North Shore, there are plenty of worthwhile stops. A few personal favorites are Treat Baking Company (Hamilton) and Sandpiper Bakery (Ipswich). Both of which are

delicious in their own unique ways.
